Brain Health

Creating Habits for a better Brain.

Brain Health is a new concept. As little as five years ago, it was rare to hear the words “brain” and “health” or “brain” and “fitness” in the same sentence. Today, we now know that our brain’s health, or its decline, is affected by everything we do on a daily basis. All of the stimulifrom daily activities and our environment can form and create new neurons on a daily basis regardless of age.

DR. STEVEN GOUGH

Dr. Steven T. Gough has been a clinician, specialist, educator and serial entrepreneur for the past 38 years.  As a physical therapist Dr. Gough was lucky enough to get to spend time with his patients and see them as an entire person not just someone with knee pain. Which always led to the question, “How can I serve my patients better?”

BRAIN HEALTH

  • Through the course, we will focus on the following:
  • Cognition, specifically the executive functions of memory, focus, flexibility, and, emotional control.
  • Exercises for your brain.
  • Nutrition, or food for your brain.
  • Habit Changes, including self-talk, intention, and language.
  • And lastly, managing stress considering spirituality and meditation.

What is Brain Health?

PREVIEW THE COURSE

It used to be thought that the brain had a normal decline, however, new research proves that if we care for the health of our brain, our brain can grow develop and improve its performance throughout our life span. It is now in our control and in our hands to avoid or delay the mild cognitive decline that we often see in our parents and grandparents as they age.

The goal of this course is to invest in our brain health to not only improve our cognitive function and performance but also have the luxury of sharing our life story with the generations to follow. This is the true gift of a healthy brain.

The course contains a Welcome section, 5 modules on Brain Health including lessons within each module, and a conclusion.  Each lesson will include a brief introduction, a video lecture, and a S.M.A.R.T. commitment.

Mind Matters: Research, Tips, and Strategies

It has been said that your brain is a muscle and must be exercised. The issue for most people is that they either do not know how to exercise their brain, or they utilize the same few routines day in and day out. Dr. Gough’s “Brain Health” takes that brain exercise routine to the next level. Dr. Gough not only explains how everything from exercising your body, eating right, managing stress and being a social creature impacts your brain, but gives you the tools to maximize your brain health in each one of these areas.

Dr. Gough’s class made a significant impact in my life. It never occurred to me that the brain should be treated in a holistic manner, similar to the way we treat our hearts. To me, the brain was the “thinking” part of our body, not requiring any special care-- I now realize that belief is false. I have come to understand that our brains need ongoing stimuli and care in order to function at optimum levels. Since participating in Dr. Gough’s “Brain Health” class a few years ago, I have incorporated various changes in my activities of daily living to nurture my brain and to slow down its decline in function due to aging. I have made daily physical activity, healthier food choices, and alterations in routines a priority. For anyone interested in preserving their overall health, “Brain Health” is a wonderful course.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you really improve your brain performance when you are older?
Yes, you can improve and grow your brain at any age. It used to be thought that once you aged you could not alter the brain or grow it anymore and whatever you had you were limited to that amount of brain power. We now know that the Plasticity of the brain allows us to continue to learn and create new neurons and networks, and plasticity means that your brain will continue to grow and change based on your experiences every day. This ability to grow and change can also be seen on MRI’s.
What do I have to do to care for my brain so it doesn’t decline?
Just like the rest of our bodies we need to take steps for care and maintenance. It is easy to see that if you work you muscles you can get stronger, and if you stretch your muscles, you will get more flexible, these are activities are good for our overall health. This is also true for the brain. If you choose to sit in your recliner and watch television all day your muscles will get weaker and tighter, and your brain will also start to decline in its performance, is taking care of your brain also will mean taking care of your body it a double bonus because everything that is good for your body will most likely be good for your brain. So, exercise, eating well, sleeping well, challenging yourself intellectually and physically will all go a long way to help your brain stay healthy and reliable.
What protects the brain?
There are many things that were designed to protect the brain, your skull being a hard solid container around your brain was designed to protect it. Other things like a fluid barrier that helps dampen the blow if the skull is hit by a fall, or accident, the design of vessels, blood supply a blood brain barrier to name a few are all designed to protect the brain. However, there are things we do every day to help protect our brains, like bike helmets, or any kind of helmet that is sport specific where a danger may exist. Wearing a seat belt in the car, protection for you hearing and eyes or nose are also protection for your brain. These are the common things people think about. There are a number of others that most folks don’t think about, like, eating well, sleeping well. Losing just a couple of hours of sleep one night can affect your brain negatively from its performance intellectually like when taking a test or physically when performing a complicated physical task like operating machinery. An increase in car and truck accidents are often associated with being tired. Not managing stress negatively affect our brains. Being isolated from other people in our lives, being lonely can negatively affect the performance of our brains. So, managing some of these habits can help protect or brains.
What do habits have to do with the Brain?
Bad lifestyle habits have a negative effect on the brain, good lifestyle habits have a positive effect on the brain. If we can manage to change our bad habits to better habits, we will see improvements is our brains. Most bad habits are rituals that we don’t think about. The brain health course helps you identify the habits and gives you guidance to help change those bad habits to good habits. You may have good habits and can be altered to make better so you don’t have to have a bunch of bad habits to benefit, you could have many good habits we would just help you improve even more to increase your brains performance.
How is this course different from any other course to improve your brain?
What we know is that a course that educates you about your brain does not change behavior. Education is not enough, think about this if Education was enough, no one would smoke or vape, because everyone knows these are bad for your health but yet we still have people that smoke. So, we need more than education, in this course you not only get educated as to how you can improve your brain but you also are held accountable to make change in your behaviors, you make commitments and are guided through to make the changes you commit to. These changes are your decisions as to how big or small of changes you want to make but they are tracked and recorded so you can see how you have changed for the better and celebrate your success. The secret sauce is that you not only get educated but you actually make changes in your life that will help protect and improve your brains performance. This is real benefit for your brain and your overall health.
How long does this course take to complete?
The course is set up to be completed in Twelve weeks at the fastest speed, however we want you to make changes so it could take you longer, which is fine. Habit change takes time, and we will be making fairly significant changes in your life. Each week you make another commitment, and these commitments accumulate and continue which again is the secret sauce of success, you will be a changed person for the better at the completion of this course. There is no other course I am aware of that will create a customized plan, created by you, performed by you, that benefits specifically you, with the help that this course provides for you to change your life for the better. (Note from Dr. Gough, I take this course repeatedly, because I can always improve and the course design will allow you to retake and recommit so that not only will you make changes in your life during the course but you will be able to apply the process continually for the rest of your life, to get better and better. This can be transformational in your life. You get to choose how big or fast of a change you want to make and you get to continue to change long as you want. It is customized by you and can be used the rest of your life.
Who is this course designed for, who should take this course?
Because we know the normal decline curve for brain performance which has been around for a long time. We know anyone older than 35-40years old is on the down side of the brain performance curve. So, if you want to improve your performance you will benefit if you are over 35 or 40 years old on average.
